Bedford Days: CrossFit & Barbells on the Waterfront, July 2nd

Member Of The Month: November 2015

Date Posted December 02 2015

The member of the month for November is Emma Dean!

For so many reasons but I think her accomplishment last month in the Nova Scotia Weightlifting Association's Provincial Championships should be recognized as a huge milestone for her and for Rocky Lake CrossFit as a community.  She placed 3rd in her weight division.  Liftinging a combined total of 101kg in Snatch and Clean & Jerk.

There are many things that make Emma an awesome athlete and person as you'll read below but from a coache's perspecitive what makes her stand out are the following things:

  • Consistency - In the box training with intention, 5-7 days a week.
  • Goal Setting - Emma has goals.  We discuss them, we set them and write them down.  They're real.  They aren't just an arbitrary thought in her head.
  • Beginners Midset - She comes in everyday willing to learn.  No matter what her thoughts or opinions, she participates in the process and experience, completly open to learning.
  • Trust - We have a coach-to-athlete relationship where there is no wasted time considering if I have her best interest and safety in mind.  She trusts I'm going to help her progress and is less distracted because of this.  All of her focus goes into the WOD.
  • Focus - She knows when to work and when to play.  Coming into the box for her is fun and you'll learn that she loves the community but she's not there to mess around.

We had Emma to answer a few questions:

What is your Age/occupation?

17, Student at École Secondaire du Sommet and I have a part time job at Joe fresh in Bedford!

How did you discover CrossFit?

My step dad, Ryan started going because that's all his sister would talk about! I ended up trying one class with Ryan and I've been coming ever since!

Fitness history prior to CrossFit?

I was a gymnast for 8 years, 5 of them being competitive. I stopped gymnastics in 2010 and did paddling for 2 years. I didn't love it so I decided to try springboard diving. I was a competitive diver for 2 years but now I've found my favourite sports, crossfit and weighlifting!

Has CrossFit changed your view on fitness? How has CrossFit impacted your lifestyle?

I think CrossFit is the sport I've done that's most impacted my life, because it's the one I've loved the most. It's makes me focus on a healthier lifestyle, I workout way more than I used too and I always try to eat a little healthier!

What do you enjoy most about CrossFit?

I love working out and doing some WODs but it's really the people that I train with and the coaches that have a huge impact on why I love the sport so much!

If you could program a WOD what would it look like?

Something with handstand push-ups, handstand walking and some sort of squat!

Least favourite WOD or movement?

My least favourite movements would have to be pull-ups, running, burpees and wall balls.

What would be your healthy go to meal?/favourite not so healthy indulgence?

Not so healthy: Ice cream cake!!

Healthy: chicken fajitas

Special moment at the box you remember from November?

Defiantly the training before the competition, all the "Good lucks!" I got and especially all the congratulations I got afterwards!

Fitness goal for 2015?

  • Muscle ups
  • Improving my running!

What advice would you give to someone wanting to try but is too nervous?

CrossFit is not about making fun of anyone because you can do a certain movement or lift a certain weight. All the workouts can be scaled! Everyone at the box is super welcoming and nice. There's no reason to be nervous! I love going to the box, it's one of the best parts of my day!

Leave us with an interesting fact about you?

I'm bilingual I can fluently speak French and English!
