Try to beat Jason into the box... You lose that battle 9 times out of 10!
- Rocky Lake CrossFit
I started Crossfit in 2014 at another box and really didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I had attempted to gain fitness several times in the past few years through multiple means—workout videos, gym memberships, running programs, etc. Nothing stuck. I would drop a few pounds at first, then get busy with life, and workouts fell by the wayside.
Last summer, I started graduate school in addition to full-time employment, and dreaded the probable effects on my energy and waistline. A graduate of our program spoke to us on the first day about the importance of taking care of yourself as well as all of your responsibilities. This guy was an active triathlete in great shape. During his presentation, he showed a slide of a 300lb guy sitting at a kitchen table, then explained that the guy in the photo was him at the end of the graduate program! He had given up on himself to grind through school and had paid for it dearly. This resonated with me, as I have the genetic makeup and eating habits to end up in exactly the same place. So, I signed up for a foundations course at a box near my work and got started. I loved Crossfit from the first, as it was nothing like anything I had attempted before. The coaches and people were great, and I always felt good after a workout. I stuck with that box as a monthly member for a couple of months before work travel got in the way.
I found Rocky Lake Crossfit through a Facebook post from my former box back in March 2015 and signed up right away. Since then, I’ve tried to attend as much as possible, often making four or five classes per week. I’m getting stronger, leaner, and have better wind than ever. I enjoy the camaraderie of the 6am group VERY much—they make the classes fun no matter how difficult the workouts and I look forward to seeing everyone every morning. Most of all, I appreciate the awesome, knowledgeable staff. Shane has helped me get better at every turn. I’ve worked through a couple of injuries with his help, and learned to do things I couldn’t do before (Double Unders!!!), and how to do them the right way. I visited a box in my hometown this week, and one of the coaches there commented positively on my form. That was all because of the coaching I’ve received at RLC.
I can’t wait to see how this community grows and am glad to be a part of it.
